Ubuntu 10.10 -- Majestic Destruction's multimedia virtual studio
A few days before Christmas my PC had some problems and crashed. Around the same time Adobe CS4 expired and because I couldn't afford to purchase the program I began checking into Linux to see if video editing has improved. And so it has.
Before installing Ubuntu 10.10 I lost everything on my hard drive. Emotionally I was ok. Not something I wanted to happen, but It wasn't the end of the world. I have some of the data backed up from various sources. (internet, flash drives, dvds, etc.) However, I have permanatly lost over 500 gigs of video and 100 gigs of games. I don't miss the games, they were a distraction anyways. I'm tired of PC gaming. As for the videos, some of them are still on my old hi8mm tapes. However, I nolonger have any analog equipment.
After installing Ubuntu it didn't take long to figure out the basics. And then I installed a bunch of production related software and just recently learned how to not only edit videos, but was able to create my own DVD content using Gimp, Kmediafactory, and other opensource apps that interconnect easily with each other. Here's what got me, no crashes. Not one so far. With a Windows PC, you can expect a crash almost everyday in the industry. (Not getting into Macs on this one) Anyway, it only took me 6 hours to complete an entire video project (for post), and includes burning it to DVD.
As for the video itself, it is a personal gift to a few of my close friends. I'd publish it here if they gave permission, but that's not going to happen.
